I have 4 Black Sex-Link hens and 25 Buff Orpington hens in one separate flock. I also have 37 Black Australorp hens and 3 Black Australorp roosters,in another flock. Every one is laying now so I am getting about 20 dozen eggs per week.
Their eggs are brown-shelled, have very yellow yolks and taste delicious. And wow! Do they ever make a great pumpkin pie!
The hens are free-ranged over an acre of land. No chemicals of any kind are used on this land. They forage in the pasture and are supplemented with a plant-based layer feed. Their food has no animal fat or animal by-products added to or included with it.
I do not use synthetic (chemical) fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. I use composted horse and chicken manure to fertilize my garden and pasture, as well as other organic fertilizers. In season fruit and vegetables may show up at market periodically along with the eggs.
